Patience Over Pride

Monday
Patience is better than pride. A slow spirit is stronger than a swift temper — and God honors the one who rules their own heart.
A swift temper feels powerful in the moment — but pride always precedes a fall. When we react before wisdom has a chance to speak we say things we cannot take back, make decisions we cannot undo and damage relationships that take years to restore. James does not tell us to suppress our feelings — he tells us to slow down long enough for wisdom to lead. Self control is not silence. It is the discipline of letting God's wisdom speak before your emotion does. This week before every conversation that could provoke you — pause. Listen twice as long as you speak. Let self control govern your words before they leave your mouth.
Lord, make me quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. Where my words have run ahead of Godly wisdom — restrain me. Let Your Spirit govern my tongue and my temper today. Amen.
Wednesday
Pride says — I have the right to respond. Wisdom says — I have the responsibility to respond well. By now this week you have encountered moments that tested which one was leading you. Friday is coming — and it will ask you to examine what those moments revealed about your heart.
Where this week has your anger or impatience spoken before your wisdom had a chance to? What did it cost you?
Friday
Lord, slow me down. Where I have been quick to react — make me quick to listen instead. Where my words have run ahead of Godly wisdom — forgive me and restore what was lost. Amen.
This weekend — before you speak into any difficult situation ask yourself three things — Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Let self control govern your words this weekend.
- Where did patience produce a better outcome than a quick reaction would have this week?
- Was there a moment where your anger spoke before your wisdom? What would you do differently?
- As you close this week how will you practice being slow to speak and slow to anger this weekend?
